India Customs Baggage Rules 2026: Duty Free Allowance & Limits Guide

India has introduced updated Customs Baggage Rules 2026, bringing major relief to international travellers. The most important change is the increase in duty-free allowance from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000 for Indian residents and travellers of Indian origin arriving by air or sea. These rules came into effect on 2 February 2026, replacing the decade-old baggage framework and making travel more convenient for passengers returning from abroad. The move is part of a broader effort to modernise customs procedures and align them with current travel trends and spending patterns.

Duty Free Allowance in India: Who is Eligible in 2026

Under the new baggage rules, most travellers including Indian residents, Indian-origin tourists and foreign nationals with valid non-tourist visas can bring goods worth up to ₹75,000 duty free, while foreign tourists can bring goods worth up to ₹25,000 duty free. The allowance applies only to items carried personally or in accompanied baggage. Additionally, used personal items like clothes and travel essentials are fully exempt from customs duty, making it easier for travellers to carry regular personal belongings without extra charges. Another major highlight of the updated rules is the duty-free import of one laptop for passengers aged 18 years and above, which is allowed separately under the baggage rules.

Gold Jewellery Allowance

The revised rules also continue jewellery concessions for eligible travellers, typically allowing up to 40 grams for female passengers and 20 grams for others under specific conditions. These changes are expected to benefit millions of Indian expatriates and frequent travellers by reducing customs hassles and improving clearance speed at airports.

Items Excluded from Duty-Free Allowance in India

However, certain items are still excluded from duty-free benefits. These include firearms, excess tobacco products, alcohol beyond permitted limits, gold or silver in forms other than jewellery, and televisions. Travellers must declare such items and may need to pay customs duty or face legal action. Overall, the new baggage rules aim to simplify travel, increase transparency and create a smoother customs experience for passengers arriving in India.
