Qatar Museums Chairperson H.E. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani has announced the creation of Doha Pavilion: Gerhard Richter, a new permanent, site-specific art and architecture project by renowned German artist Gerhard Richter. The announcement was made during a special event at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Designed by Richter and developed with Selldorf Architects, the hexagonal pavilion will be located at MIA Park in Doha and will house a collection of his paintings and sculptures, including Strip paintings, Mirrors and the Strip Tower. The pavilion is scheduled to be unveiled on November 20, 2026, ahead of the opening of Qatar’s new international contemporary art quadrennial, Rubaiya Qatar.

The Doha Pavilion reflects Qatar Museums’ continued commitment to expanding public art and strengthening international cultural partnerships. Richter said his visit to Doha in 2013 inspired the idea for the pavilion, with its exterior patterns drawing from his 2011 artist’s book Patterns and his Strip paintings. During her Berlin visit, Sheikha Al Mayassa also joined Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson for a public discussion on “Art, Patronage and Cultural Stewardship.” The inaugural Rubaiya Qatar, running from November 21, 2026, to April 30, 2027, will feature more than 50 regional and international artists, 25 new commissions and six public art installations across venues including the Museum of Islamic Art, Mathaf, Katara and AlRiwaq Arts + Architecture.
