The Music Affairs Centre at Qatar’s Ministry of Culture is continuing to develop its “Maqam” Choir, a distinctive musical project bringing together local vocal talents to explore the expressive power of the human voice while showcasing Arab musical heritage through contemporary ensemble performance. Rooted in the traditional Arab musical concept of the maqam, the choir reinterprets songs from across the Arab world through vocal harmony, rhythm and carefully arranged performances. Following nearly a year of preparation, selected singers underwent dedicated training and development to form the core ensemble.

Khalid Al Salem, Director of the Music Affairs Centre, said “Maqam” reflects the Centre’s commitment to discovering and developing vocal talent in Qatar. Unlike a conventional choir, the project focuses primarily on a cappella performance, with the human voice creating melody, rhythm and harmony across four vocal ranges. While a cappella remains central to its identity, the choir can also combine ensemble singing with instrumental music. Its repertoire draws on diverse musical traditions from across the Arab world, aiming to preserve the character of traditional songs while presenting them through innovative vocal arrangements. The project is also notable as this form of choral performance remains relatively uncommon in the Arab world and Gulf region.
