23-09-2025
Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) announced the inclusion of Murwab and Barzan sites in the Arab Register of Architectural and Urban Heritage. This recognition underscores QMA’s ongoing commitment to documenting and promoting Qatar’s archaeological and cultural treasures. The listing was officially confirmed by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) during the 10th Meeting of the Observatory of Architectural and Urban Heritage in Beirut, Lebanon, held from July 29–31, 2025. These efforts highlight Qatar’s dedication to safeguarding its historical legacy on both regional and global levels.
Among the newly added sites is the Barzan Towers, one of Qatar’s most significant historical defense structures, renowned for its traditional architectural style, use of local materials, and integration with natural surroundings. The Murwab Archaeological Site, dating back to the Abbasid era, also received recognition as a unique example of early Islamic architecture in the Arabian Gulf region. Both sites reflect Qatar’s rich heritage and serve as important destinations for researchers, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts. Their inclusion in the Arab Register enhances the nation’s reputation as a center for heritage preservation and historical study.
This year, Qatar Museums Authority celebrates its 20th anniversary, marked by the Evolution Nation campaign, an 18-month initiative honoring Qatar’s cultural journey over the past 50 years. The campaign highlights the nation’s efforts to preserve, showcase, and promote its art, culture, and heritage. The addition of Murwab and Barzan sites aligns with QMA’s mission to protect Qatar’s historical treasures for future generations. These initiatives continue to raise global awareness and appreciation of Qatar’s invaluable cultural legacy.
