Qatar boasts a highly advanced medical infrastructure and the standards of healthcare in the country are very high. The country’s medical facilities – public and private clinics and hospitals – are all modern, hi-tech and easily accessible for residents and expatriates alike. Everyone is able to avail themselves of the health services that are financed by public money, and access is open to all, for people of all nationalities. The system is made up of highly skilled professionals with the newest equipment working in a network of hospitals and clinics around the country.
Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), meanwhile, operates and manages the different Health Centers across the state of Qatar. In order to receive treatment from any of HMC’s healthcare facilities or hospitals, you must first apply for and acquire a Hamad Health Card.
People who live in Qatar, both citizens and residents, can apply for a health card. This card lets them use services at any PHCC health center and Hamad Medical Corporation's healthcare facilities or hospitals. The card shows your ID number, nationality, photo and date of issue.
To get a health card, go to the PHCC health center closest to where you live. There you need to fill out the appropriate forms. You will be issued a PHCC health file number. Remember to bring these things with you:
Qatari citizens and GCC nationals need a valid QID, photo, and 50 QR fee. Domestic staff need additional documents including their sponsor's QID. Other residents require a QID, photo, and pay 100 QR. Children might need additional documents such as a birth certificate or vaccination card. For specific document requirements based on your nationality and circumstances, it's advisable to contact the PHCC directly for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
All applicants must submit a copy of a utility bill as proof of residence. You can pay by credit or debit card, not cash. The health center might give you the card right away or ask you to come back later. For expats, the card lasts one year. People can now apply for a health card online using the new Nar'aakom app. You can download this app on iPhones and Android phones. To sign in, use the National Authentication System (Tawtheeq).
Expats' Health cards remain valid for one year. Your Hamad health card won't show an expiration date. You can check the expiry date online at Hukoomi Qatar Government Portal or through the Nar'aakom app.
You can renew your health card right away at all PHCC health centers and HMC hospitals. The process is straightforward. You also have the option to renew cards online via Hukoomi Qatar Government Portal.
If you misplace your valid health card Qatari nationals need to pay QR50 for a replacement, while non-Qataris need to pay QR100. If you lose an expired health card Qatari national need to pay QR100 for a replacement, and non-Qataris need to pay QR200.
